Hippies and environmentalists, who are sometimes one and the same, can rejoice in the very surreal news that Volkswagen has greenlit (no pun intended) the production of the iconic 1960s Microbus camper van with a modern/futuristic electric demeanor.  The van will be battery-powered and sleeker in look but will still carry a lot of its nostalgic DNA.  The concept was first announced at the Detroit auto show in January 2017 and according to Volkswagen, public appeal for actual production was so intense that the company could not ignore the customer appeals as well as the potential for financial windfall.  The VW van known in Germany as the Bulli, is being tagged as the ID Buzz for its electric iteration and will likely go on sale in 2022. The Buzz I.D. is advertised to potentially be capable of level 3 autonomous driving and will also be created in a cargo version.  The I.D. Buzz is being viewed as a tangible way to compete with Elon Musk’s Tesla that has become a distinctive trailblazer in the electric car arena.  In fact, Volkswagen stresses that it plans to have more than 30 all-electric models by the year 2025.
