There’s no doubt about it – Pharrell Williams is on fire right now. His resurgence began last year with his catchy crooning on the global smash “Get Lucky” for Daft Punk and his production on the ubiquitous “Blurred Lines” with Robin Thicke. Using that momentum, he dropped his G I R L album earlier this year anchored by the contagious, global hit, “Happy.” To coincide with the album, Pharrell curated an art exhibition at Gallerie Perrotin in Paris featuring works by Murakami, Sophie Calle, Terry Richardson and Marina Abramovic.
“Think of it as Pharrell reimagined as a post-modern Imhotep …”
Another of the artists featured in his show was Daniel Arsham, a highly respected artist who takes the unique approach of depicting items of today as treasured archaeological artifacts.
With that concept in mind, Daniel Arsham decided to make a life-size cast of Pharrell Williams fashioned from shattered glass and resin. It was a tedious process that required Pharrell to stand silently in the molding material (covered with Vaseline) for two hours during. Think of it as Pharrell reimagined as a post-modern Imhotep and being discovered in an obscure Egyptian tomb.
Our friend, the skilled photographer James Law captured the entire process. You can peruse the Pharrell transformation in the slideshow above. The end product of Arsham’s masterpiece titled “the future pharrell” can be seen below (photo by Claire Dorn).
The show is still available to view at the Galerie Perrotin in Paris located at 76 Rue de Turenne – It will be on display till June 25th.
