“We’re not trying to reinvent the wheel or make a fashion statement,” explains London menswear designer Xander Zhou – one of China’s design polymaths, who also acts as the creative consultant for Common Gender’s 52-look collection, is a mixture of classic and vintage styles for the modern man. “There is this mass consumer in between the low and high ends and they want quality at an affordable price,” says Lea Chan, vice president, and creative director, adds, “It’s like a blue ocean.” Unlike other brands who are making lines deliberately at a lower price point for the mass market, there is a new movement where designers a making quality gear that’s in reach price wise for everyone. There has been some ridiculousness in fashion lately, i.e: $2000 plastic shopping bag etc – No judgment here. Common Gender is collaborating with emerging designers like Xander Zhou to help with brand direction also speaks to how the large fashion global corporations are tapping into designers rooted in the streetwear market to stay one step ahead and for understanding what’s cool today among early adopters. The style Common Gender is coming with is the next level of a mature cool streetwear look.
