Let’s face it; music is the universal language, and this is true for every corner of the globe. With the advance of technology, it’s getting to the point where people just don’t have to sit back and listen to the music of their favorite artists; now they can actually invest a little time and effort and make music themselves. One of the pioneers in this field is a new music studio in NYC that’s trying to democratize music for all. It’s called The Foxgrove and they specialize in DJ and music classes for anyone who’s ever hard that spark of interest for being part of the music world. Even though it’s still in its beginning stages, it has already garnered a lot of buzz from respected publications like Rolling Stone, Fast Company, and The Wall Street Journal. Read our interview below:
“We see a trend of regular people creating their own music and becoming participators rather than just spectators …”
When was The Foxgrove founded and who were the visionaries behind this innovative idea?
Developed a year ago by Natalie Lam, who’s background is in advertising, and her partner David Maurice, a songwriter and producer who’s worked with the likes of Boy George, Jay-Z and most recently, the notorious, Azalea Banks; The Foxgrove aims to pull back the curtain on the often-intimidating world of electronic music.
Why was it important for this type of musical educational experience to happen in NYC?
The idea is to get regular people who would not usually touch music and have zero experience to try a new after work activity in an un-intimidating environment. There aren’t many interactive experiences in NYC other than eg. cooking classes/pottery class/painting etc. This is a new and fun after work or group activity!
What are some of the most popular music courses/services offered at The Foxgrove?
The two most popular music courses are The Intro to Electronic Music Production and our Instant DJ class. This class is the ultimate class to DJing! In just a matter of hours you will know all the important fundamental DJ skills. We focus on controller-ism – the future of DJing and the easiest to learn. Expect to create and leave the class with your very first DJ set.
How has state-of-the-art technology and studio equipment enabled you to serve your students better?
Music technology has moved on leaps and bounds in the past few years and it’s now very easy with little to no musical knowledge to create your own tracks and DJ much in the way that Instagram has allowed people to become photographers without having to go through the learning curve using professional equipment!
Have you provided any recording services for any noteworthy artists/musicians
Most recently Azalea Banks latest critically acclaimed release ‘Slayz’ mixtape was entirely recorded and mixed at The Foxgrove.
Do you ever do any industry events/functions etc at the Foxgrove?
We have done many group team bonding industry events/functions over the past year for clients including: Fast Company, The Foxgrove, The Yard; as well as birthday parties and private group events.
Lastly, what plans do you have for the continuing growth and evolution of The Foxgrove in the next 5-10 years?
We see a trend of regular people creating their own music and becoming participators rather than just spectators and the gap between the amateur and the professional closing. We are here to encourage people to become creators!!
