Collaborations between artists and their contemporaries are not new and have allowed artists to create works that transcend their individual zones. “Murakami and Abloh both reject the air of exclusivism that floats around the art world, instead of creating work that synthesizes culture and erases the lines between high and low.” Going as far back as Man Ray and Duchamp to the ’80s you had Warhol and Basquiat collabs; Fast forward to 2018 you know have Virgil Abloh and Takashi Murakami. Abloh served as creative director for the Kanye West about a decade ago when the two first met – Murakami designed an album cover for Kanye. Following their eventful exhibitions at Gagosian’s London and Paris outposts, Takashi Murakami and Virgil Abloh have once again joined forces – the anticipated presentation is the duo’s biggest one yet being at the institution’s Beverly Hills gallery. Entitled “AMERICA TOO” is on view at the Gagosian through October 25.
